Steven Universe has a well-established sound palette and we wanted to honor that throughout this trailer. This meant crisp natural sounds and foley, powerful synth hits during actions sequences, and ultimately letting the music drive where appropriate. We always wanted to serve the dialogue first, but the trailer was edited in such a way that we had moments to let the design shine and carry the story. The best example is when the villain is introduced. The music and dialogue fade away, replaced by an ominous drone and intense storm as her ship arrives. The mix was a delicate balance of keeping dialogue crystal clear, letting the music drive, and pushing the design through where it could be most impactful.
